The Boshan Incense Burner was a popular incense burning tool during the Han and Jin dynasties in China, known for its unique fairy mountain shape and exquisite craftsmanship.
Boshan Incense Burner, also known as "Boshan Incense Burner", "Boshan Aromatherapy" or "Boshan Incense Burner", was a common incense burner during the Han and Jin dynasties, mainly made of bronze and ceramic ware. Its name originates from the hollow mountain shaped design of the furnace cover, symbolizing the legendary sea fairy mountain "Boshan" (now Boshan District, Zibo City, Shandong Province) in the Han Dynasty, while also incorporating the characteristics of its place of origin.
During the Western Han Dynasty, with the introduction of resin based spices such as Longnaoxiang and Suhexiang, the traditional bean shaped incense burners that directly burned herbal fragrances were gradually replaced due to excessive smoke and fire. Boshan furnace uses charcoal fire to heat incense balls or cakes, making the aroma more intense and reducing smoke, becoming mainstream.
Ding Wan, a skilled worker in the Han Dynasty, was famous for his overlapping carving of strange birds and monsters. His works had a much higher level of craftsmanship complexity than later five legged and three legged incense burners. The Cuoboshan furnace body unearthed from the tomb of Prince Jing Liu Sheng in Zhongshan, Hebei Province in 1968 is bean shaped, with a high and pointed lid and hollowed out overlapping mountain ranges. The mountain ranges are carved with birds, beasts, cloud patterns, etc. The furnace base is often in the shape of a plate or a divine beast holding up, symbolizing the immortal mountain floating on the sea.
When burning incense, smoke escapes from the hollow mountain shape, creating a visual effect of swirling in a fairyland, with both practical (smoking clothes, avoiding filth) and aesthetic functions.
The Boshan Furnace is a materialized embodiment of the Han Dynasty's immortal magic philosophy, expressing the ideal of ascending to immortality thr
